**282. Hi,
my name is Sarah and I need
help with long division and I knew
I can count on you so if you get a chance to
e-mail me and make me an example how to do long division. Can
you e-mail me at 6:00 please. thank you **

ANSWER:

**Hi, Sarah!!! How
wonderful that you are so devoted to learning and so motivated to ask!!!!
THANKS for visiting my Web Sites!!!! **

**While I do not
answer questions from children --my Web Sites are for Teachers, and Parents, and
School personnel in general, I will try to help you as best I can!!!**

**When you get a
division problem,**

**For example:
25 divided by 5,
the question that the problem asks is:**

**How many groups
of 5 are there in 25?**

**So, you have to
find the number of groups
--each group having the same number of items in it-- into which you can evenly
divide
the total amount of items you are given.**

**Thus, let's
say, I am given the total amount of 25 items.
I need to find the number of groups I can evenly divide 25 items
So that each group has 5 items in it.**

**The answer is 5
-- There are 5 groups of 5 items each into which I can evenly divided a total
number of 25 items.**

**Try these
division problems by asking the question and finding the answer, just as I
showed you above:**

**33 divided by 11
-- What is the question?
45 divided by 9 -- What is the question?
100 divided by 10
100 divided by 5
120 divided by 20
30 divided by 3
30 divided by 15
65 divided by 65**

**Now, long
division asks the same question, just the numbers are larger.**

**For example:
2,222 divided by 2.**

**The question is:
Can you find the number of groups
--each group having the same number of items in it, that is, 2 items per group--
into which you can evenly divide the total amount you are given, that is 2,222
items?**

**The answer is:
there are 1,111 groups of 2 items each into which you can divide the total
number of 2,222 items.**

**Try
**

**3,333 divided by
3 --
What is the question and the answer?
4,444 divided by 4
4,444 divided by 2
5,555 divided by 5
6,666 divided by 6
6,666 divided by 3
6,666 divided by 2**

**Here is another
question: Can you find the number of groups
--each group having the same number of items in it, that is, 22 items per
group--
into which you can evenly divide
the total amount you are given, that is 2,222 items?**

**The answer is:
there are 101 groups of 22 items each into which you can divide the total number
of 2,222 items.**

**Practice asking
the question I showed you above and try finding the answer for these long
division problems:**

**1000 divided by
10
1000 divided by 20
133,332 divided by 3
133,335 divided by 15**

**Now, you can
check your answers in division by multiplying:
25 divided by 5 = 5 Thus, 5 X 5 = 25**

**Check your
answers for all the above division questions by multiplying. At this time you
may wish to use a calculator.**

**That is exactly
what the PROCESS of long division is all about: a way of calculating by
dividing and multiplying until you get your answer. I wish I could help you
further but you may need to use pencil and paper --instead of your computer, so
that you can practice the PROCESS of long division. **

**BEST wishes!!!**
