283.  Subject: Re: TESOL.  I am interested in teaching ESL in California.  What are the requirements to take the CLAD (Cross-Cultural, Language and Academic Development) or B-CLAD (Bilingual-Cross Cultural, Language and Academic Development.)  Do I need to have a Bachelor's degree to take these courses?  How long will it take to finish these courses?  Thank you for your prompt reply.


You are a very wise person to try to get information BEFORE arriving here in California. 

The most important TEST you MUST take to teach in California is the C-BEST.   This test is offered through the Commission on Teacher Credentialing and you simply cannot get a teaching position without it.   This is your FIRST step!!!!! 

While it is required to have a Bachelor's Degree for teaching in California, our teacher shortage is such that school districts have in place INTERNSHIPS for Bachelor's Degree candidates who --after taking the C-BEST-- may be teaching full time AND completing their Bachelor's degrees under the sponsorship of school districts.   You may wish to contact LARGE school district in California and ask about their INTERNSHIP programs leading to a Bachelor's degree as well as a teaching credential (usually called the "fifth" year of college when candidates take the required courses for the various credentials in California).   It is at this point that you may prepare yourself through course work to take the C.L.A.D. or the B.-C.L.A.D.   These CERTIFICATES can also be obtained through EXAMINATION -- Consult the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.   I have both, the C.L.A.D. and the B.-C.L.A.D. through examinations. 

As courses, the C.L.A.D. and B.-C.L.A.D. probably will take you one or two semesters each, depending on which college or university you apply to.   As EXAMINATIONS, these Certificates can be obtained in one day by passing the day-long test for each.   However, you need to prepare yourself for these tests and this preparation may take some time.   Consult the Commission on Teacher Credentialing in Sacramento, California (or through their Web Site).
